Yosua 1:4

1:4 Your territory will extend from the wilderness in the south to Lebanon in the north. It will extend all the way to the great River Euphrates in the east (including all of Syria) and all the way to the Mediterranean Sea in the west.

Yosua 6:6

6:6 So Joshua son of Nun summoned the priests and instructed them, “Pick up the ark of the covenant, and seven priests must carry seven rams’ horns in front of the ark of the Lord.”

Yosua 6:25

6:25 Yet Joshua spared Rahab the prostitute, her father’s family, and all who belonged to her. She lives in Israel to this very day because she hid the messengers Joshua sent to spy on Jericho.

Yosua 11:8

11:8 The Lord handed them over to Israel and they struck them down and chased them all the way to Greater Sidon, Misrephoth Maim, and the Mizpah Valley to the east. They struck them down until no survivors remained.

Yosua 12:1

12:1 Now these are the kings of the land whom the Israelites defeated and drove from their land 10  on the east side of the Jordan, 11  from the Arnon Valley to Mount Hermon, including all the eastern Arabah:

Yosua 12:3

12:3 His kingdom included 12  the eastern Arabah from the Sea of Kinnereth 13  to the Sea of the Arabah (the Salt Sea), 14  including the route to Beth Jeshimoth and the area southward below the slopes of Pisgah.

Yosua 12:7

12:7 These are the kings of the land whom Joshua and the Israelites defeated on the west side of the Jordan, from Baal Gad in the Lebanon Valley to Mount Halak on up to Seir. Joshua assigned this territory to the Israelite tribes, 15

Yosua 19:27

19:27 It turned eastward toward Beth Dagon, touched Zebulun and the Valley of Iphtah El to the north, as well as the Valley of Emek and Neiel, and extended to Cabul on the north 16

Yosua 20:6

20:6 He must remain 17  in that city until his case is decided by the assembly 18  and the high priest dies. 19  Then the one who committed manslaughter may return home to the city from which he escaped.” 20

Yosua 23:4

23:4 See, I have parceled out to your tribes these remaining nations, 21  from the Jordan to the Mediterranean Sea 22  in the west, including all the nations I defeated. 23

tn Heb “all the land of the Hittites.” The expression “the land of the Hittites” does not refer to Anatolia (modern Turkey), where the ancient Hittite kingdom of the second millennium b.c. was located, but rather to Syria, the “Hatti land” mentioned in inscriptions of the first millennium b.c. (see HALOT 1:363). The phrase is omitted in the LXX and may be a scribal addition.

tn Heb “the Great Sea,” the typical designation for the Mediterranean Sea.

tn Heb “From the wilderness and this Lebanon even to the great river, the River Euphrates, all the land of the Hittites, even to the great sea [at] the place where the sun sets, your territory will be.”

tn Heb “kept alive.”

tn Heb the house of her father.”

tn Or “among the Israelites”; Heb “in the midst of Israel.”

tn The meaning of the Hebrew name “Misrephoth Maim” is perhaps “lime-kilns by the water” (see HALOT 2:641).

10 tn Heb “and took possession of their land.”

11 tn Heb “beyond the Jordan, toward the rising of the sun.”

12 tn The words “his kingdom included” are supplied in the translation for clarification.

13 sn The Sea of Kinnereth is another name for the Sea of Galilee. See the note on the word “Kinnereth” in 11:2.

14 sn The Salt Sea is another name for the Dead Sea.

15 tn Heb “Joshua gave it to the tribes of Israel as a possession according to their allotted portions.”

16 tn Heb “left.”

17 tn Or “live.”

18 tn Heb “until he stands before the assembly for judgment.”

19 tn Heb “until the death of the high priest who is in those days.”

20 tn Heb “may return and enter his city and his house, the city from which he escaped.”

21 tn Heb “I have assigned by lots to you these remaining nations as an inheritance for your tribes.”

22 tn Heb “the Great Sea,” the typical designation for the Mediterranean Sea.

23 tn Heb “from the Jordan and all the nations which I cut off and the Great Sea [at] the place where the sun sets.” The relationship of the second half of the verse, which mentions nations already conquered, to the first half, which speaks of “remaining nations,” is difficult to understand.
